CompostNow Brings An Easy SOILution To Composting in Charleston

Home pick-up service launching April 1st to collect food waste and build healthy soil.

CompostNow Inc., a compostables collection service founded in Raleigh, NC, is expanding their services to Charleston, SC. Their residential collection service is set to launch April 1, 2019 and will allow community members to compost their food waste and other compostables from their doorstep. For $29 a month, members will get a bin to fill with food scraps from home, and weekly pick up. Each member will earn finished compost to use for their own gardening efforts, or they can donate it to a local garden partner. This service will be available to homes in downtown Charleston, North Charleston, Mt Pleasant (west of the Isle of Palms connector), Sullivans Island, Folly Beach, James Island, Johns Island, and West Ashley.

"We are excited for the increased environmental awareness this new service will bring to Charleston residents. At this critical juncture of a changing climate and sea level rise, we should be taking every possible measure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase resiliency in our community.  Composting is an easy step residents can take to do both,” says Betsy La Force, a Charleston community member and compost advocate.

CompostNow arrived in Charleston by way of taking the reigns of Food Waste Disposal - a commercial compostable hauling service that was started in Charleston in 2009 by Wayne Koeckeritz. After a successful transition, CompostNow has been servicing commercial members, like Verde, Huriyali Gardens, and Charleston County School district, since October 1, 2018.

Another local organization, Compost Rangers, saw the demand and growth of the composting movement in Charleston and decided to take action in 2016 by organizing a bootstrapped model of drop-off locations for residents to take their food waste to be composted. With the rapid growth of composting, Compost Rangers saw the value in joining forces with CompostNow to offer a residential collection service to make it even easier and accessible for community members to divert their compostables from the landfill.

With the collective goal to starve landfills and build healthy soils, CompostNow has partnered with four community gardens in Charleston. CompostNow members earn compost with each collection and can choose to share some of their earned compost with one of these four Garden Partners to support local community efforts: the Charleston Parks Conservancy, the Green Heart Project, the College of Charleston Campus Gardens, and Earth Heart Growers.
